About Me

A:

Photography is many things to many people. It is so much more than merely taking snapshots of friends, family members and pets, but is also an expression of human creativity. Photography is a very power form of art, with it; we can show all of the natural beauty of the world, document people, places and things; expose evil or just use it to expand our horizon. Photography gives the power to look at things differently and to be more objective in life.

I am thankful that a friend of mine had enough trust in me to lend me a fine digital camera. I have already read books on the subject, but as always, translating book knowledge in actual work is always a challenge, but a fun and rewording challenge. Is rewarding in many way, the least of which is that it teaches us to look closer at things, and it teaches us to look for the inner beauty in all things, to look beyond the dirty sidewalks and trash in the streets and all the angry personalities that we see everyday here on the mean streets of Los Angeles.

If to puts a smile on someone’s face then photography is positive tool.

B:

I am 57 year old homeless white man living in Los Angeles. I became very interested in photography from an older brother of mine, now deceased, who was a professional photographer. Now, thanks to a school teacher, who paid me to take some photos from the POW of a homeless person, re-kindled my interest.

The previously mentioned teacher will lend me a digital camera to take with me on a up-coming hike to Echo mountain and the route of the old Mt. Lowe Railway which I will photograph on May 11, and will post them on my jhornbeck PhotoBucket account at http://s222.photobucket.com/home/jhornbeck when the time comes.

Please note that, so far, none of the images are my own work, but I hope to remedy that soon.

About Me

I started dabbling in photography when I was about 14 years old. My dad was a photographer and was always taking photos. He had even built a dark room in our garage. He would enter in contests, take wedding photos, and all kinds of stuff. He gave me my first camera, a Yashica SLR. I can remember him having many cameras. Dad would mostly use slide film and then show the photos on his slide projector.

I used slide film also and would put together projects using music and the projector. I also joined the Explorer Scouts for Photography when I was in the 10th grade. We would go on outings and take pictures.

I have taken thousands of photos just over the last few months. My latest camera was a Kodak Digital 10.2MP that I got on sale at Target for $89 two years ago. Unfortunately the screen got broken due to my son and his buddies horseplay so I have been using my cell phone camera. It's ok I just can't line up some shots as I would like. I would love to be able to zoom in. I hope to get another camera soon.

I am so thrilled to be a member of Skid Row Photo Club. It's more than just taking pictures. I believe this is a positive step. I get a natural high taking photos. I find it very theraputic to create something that I see through my God given eyes.

I am a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (I draw blood) and a Medical Assistant, but have been unable to work at this time. I had to give up my childhood home after my dad passed and that's how I ended up on Skid Row.

A lot of my photos are on my FaceBook page. Check them out and tell me what you think. My page is under JoJo Wilbarger (JoAnna). Also I have been lending a hand to a great children's author and illustrator by the name of Albert Harris. He has a cute little character. Check him out on Facebook.

Most of all I hope to make others smile when they see a Photo by JoJo!
